SANE Adult and Adolescent Basic Seminar
This intensive, five-day seminar is intended to teach nurses the key components and skills necessary to provide effective healthcare and services to the adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault. This course provides in-depth knowledge on the role of the SANE, including forensic evidence collection, documentation and testifying in court. Assistance with starting and maintaining a SANE program is also provided.
Course material focuses on the psychological dynamics of sexual assault, including care of both male and female survivors. Participants learn how to collaborate with other key team members, i.e. advocates, crisis counselors, police and district attorneys. At the completion of the seminar, participants will develop an individualized plan to work towards the goal of independent practice.
An additional Clinical Skills Lab is an introduction and practice to the clinical skills necessary to perform a SANE exam. Included is the use of pelvic models for identification and speculum practice, anoscopy, colposcopy, slide review, competency review, and more The lab is limited to 16-20 participants so be sure to register early.
This seminar is primarily designed for registered nurses, but is also open to physicians, physician’s assistants, and nurse practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge of caring for adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault.
Participants who attend the entire conference and submit an evaluation will receive 37.5 contact hours. Participants who attend the entire Skills Day and submit an evaluation will receive 7 contact hours.
