        Human Trafficking

        Human Trafficking is modern-day slavery

It is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Victims are trafficked by force, fraud or coercion primarily for the purposes of labor or sexual exploitation. Human Trafficking is a significant problem in Wisconsin, where domestic and foreign victims have been identified in both urban and rural communities.

Sexual Assault Service Providers (SASPs) are uniquely positioned to identify and support trafficking victims. Advocates and SANE nurses are likely to encounter trafficking victims, because they are often subjected to sexual assault. Traffickers use sexual violence as a primary tool of power and control against women and children regardless of what type of trafficking they are in. Service providers are often the first responders in cases of human trafficking, as well as partners in raising awareness around the issue of trafficking.

As the state coalition WCASA is committed to anti-trafficking work by providing library resources PDF portable document format, technical assistance and training, engaging in policy advocacy, and helping to build capacity to serve victims of trafficking. WCASA is the member of the Office of Justice Assistance Human Trafficking Committeeexternal link, which is in the process of creating a state-wide Protocol addressing trafficking in WI. WCASA is also a member of the Freedom Network USAexternal link, a national coalition dedicated to advocating for rights of trafficking survivors.
