Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program
A sexual assault is a devastating trauma to victims both physically and emotionally. Victims of sexual assault deserve prompt comprehensive care in all medical facilities. Victims should receive medical care for the evaluation and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy concerns. Victims should be offered options of care and reporting options when requesting care from medical facilities.
In Wisconsin, Sexual assault Nurse examiners (SANE's) work within a SANE program in a hospital or community to provide medical forensic examination to treat victims for sexually transmitted infections (STI's) and address pregnancy concerns. Currently there are 37 hospital systems throughout the state that have identified SANE's in their respective communities. A through medical forensic exam is rendered by SANE's. They offer prompt compassionate comprehensive care, as well as referral if needed. A SANE will document injury and victims account of the assault and they may be helpful to victims in court if they choose to prosecute.
